This survey represents one of the most comprehensive independent studies of restaurant POS installations ever conducted. Rather than relying on vendor-reported figures or software estimates, RestaurantData.com used direct primary research to verify POS usage at each chain.

  • Total brands surveyed: 3,155 unique restaurant brands with 5 or more operating units
  • Results obtained: 2,391 brands responded
  • Penetration success rate: 75.8%
  • Survey duration: 4 months, ending August 15, 2024
  • Method: Telephone interviews and in-store visits; each brand contacted at least twice, up to four times if needed

Key Observations from the Fall 2024 Survey

NCR/Aloha dominates by unit count with 55,536 installs across 704 chains, nearly 20% of the surveyed market. However, Toast leads by chain count with 1,266 chains, reflecting its strong penetration among smaller and mid-size operators even though its average install size per chain is smaller.

In-House/Proprietary ranks #3 by unit count (35,705) despite only 15 chains, reflecting the scale of a small number of large chains and multi-concept restaurant operators that have built their own POS systems. This category was expanded in the subsequent Spring 2025 survey.
