Restaurant expansion research
Growing restaurant companies and emerging restaurant concepts can expand within a region, into another state or across several markets. RestaurantData documents that activity through verified location records tied to the brand and the operating company behind it.
Key Findings in the Selected Examples
- Tracked additions ranged from 1 to 7 in the selected study windows.
- 3 brands showed activity within 1 state; 5 brands across 2 to 4 states.
8 Growing and Emerging Restaurant Brands by Regional Footprint
Selected from 3 published EPI studies, these examples show how far each brand’s tracked expansion reached.
Each row retains its original study window and cohort. Figures describe tracked development activity, including projects with projected opening dates; current operating totals may differ. Stage labels follow the definition used on this page.

Emerging Restaurant Concepts and Growing Restaurant Companies
The terms overlap. Emerging describes a stage of development; growing describes documented expansion activity at any size.
Emerging restaurant concepts have no universal unit-count boundary. A restaurant moving from 2 locations to 3, or a brand growing from 5 units to 15, may be considered emerging. Some organizations apply the term to much larger brands.
Growing restaurant companies are defined by qualifying development records during a stated period. A 60-unit brand adding 6 locations in 9 months is a growing restaurant chain, even where some observers would no longer call it emerging. This page labels examples below 20 study units emerging and those at 20 or more growing.
RestaurantData’s core operating cohorts are micro-regional (2 to 4 units), regional multi-unit (5 to 19 units) and traditional multi-unit (20 or more units). Its chain-oriented research generally begins at 20 units. Each study can set different comparison ranges, as shown in the tables.
A concept or brand is the identity presented to customers. Its operating company or parent may have a different name, and the brand can be independently owned or part of a larger portfolio. A franchisee adding units of another company’s brand is a growing company; that expansion alone does not give it ownership of the brand. The Restaurant Data Dictionary sets the terminology used here.
Regional Restaurant Growth and New Market Entry
Expanding restaurant brands can add coverage within 1 county or metropolitan area, establish more locations in the same state, enter additional states or deepen their presence in markets they already serve.
A new market entry is a planned or confirmed location in a metropolitan area or territory where the company had no identified operating location. A new state entry is the same event at the state or province level. RestaurantData typically identifies approximately 30 to 50 new market entries per week.
How New Weekly Alerts Feed Restaurant Growth Research
New Weekly Alerts connect individual development projects with the responsible company, location and expected opening period. Each record is verified before it is issued. Qualifying records feed EPI and can contribute to the selected historical opening evidence used in Vector.
EPI and the Short-Term Expansion Arc
The Expansion Pressure Index™ evaluates concentrated development activity among restaurant companies of similar size, grouped by unit-count range. Its short-term expansion arcs typically span 1 year or less and use 3-month observation periods, reviewed individually or combined.
Connection to REI
A key EPI focus is operators approaching their next unit milestone or a broader geographic footprint. The Restaurant Enterprise Index™ adds research on the ownership and organizational structure behind larger operating stages.
Restaurant Vector and Long-Term Development Arcs
Restaurant Vector™ follows long-term development arcs over multiple years through selected historical opening evidence, including gradual additions and periods of concentrated activity. The published Chicken Salad Chick Vector profile illustrates U.S. opening signals and geographic reach.
