McDonald’s began in 1940 as McDonald’s Bar-B-Q in San Bernardino, California, under brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald. In 1948, they reduced the menu and introduced a self-service preparation system. Ray Kroc became their franchise agent in 1954 and started McDonald’s System, Inc. in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1955. McDonald’s acquired the brothers’ company rights in 1961 and became publicly traded (NYSE: MCD) in 1965. The company is headquartered at 110 North Carpenter Street in Chicago, Illinois. McDonald’s is a public company with no parent or ultimate parent. Its system includes company-operated and franchised restaurants, with more than 90% of their locations franchised. Franchisees range from single-location operators to multi-unit organizations. McDonald’s has locations in all 50 states and Canada. McDonald’s operates as quick serve, although some updated restaurant formats can also be perceived as fast casual. Breakfast, lunch and dinner availability varies by location. Its primary cuisines are Burgers and Chicken. A typical restaurant has about 90 seats and occupies about 2,500 square feet. Food-court and takeout locations may have limited seating, while freestanding drive-through restaurants can be larger.

The Restaurant Enterprise Index focuses primarily on companies with a substantial role in restaurant operations. Investment firms, financial sponsors, and other ownership partners are generally not included unless they also play a meaningful operating role; an otherwise qualifying entity may also be omitted when sufficient reliable information is unavailable.
The ownership hierarchy follows the entity structure from the bottom up, showing the profiled entity in relation to its parent organizations, including its ultimate parent. When the entity owns or operates concepts beneath it, up to three are displayed.
