KFC began in 1930 when Harland Sanders served chicken at a roadside business in Corbin, Kentucky. He completed the recipe in 1939, and the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise began near Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952. Sanders sold the company to investors in 1964. KFC later became part of PepsiCo’s restaurant division. That division was spun off as Tricon in 1997 and became Yum! Brands (YUM) in 2002. KFC is headquartered at 7100 Corporate Drive in Plano, Texas. It is a child concept of Yum! Brands, its parent and ultimate parent. More than 90% of KFC restaurants are franchised. Franchisees range from single-location operators to multi-unit organizations. They have locations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and 12 Canadian provinces and territories. It operates as quick serve, with lunch and dinner as its main meal periods. Chicken is its primary cuisine. A typical restaurant has about 80 seats and occupies about 2,000 square feet. Food-court and express locations may have no dedicated seating, while freestanding drive-through restaurants can be larger.

The Restaurant Enterprise Index focuses primarily on companies with a substantial role in restaurant operations. Investment firms, financial sponsors, and other ownership partners are generally not included unless they also play a meaningful operating role; an otherwise qualifying entity may also be omitted when sufficient reliable information is unavailable.
The ownership hierarchy follows the entity structure from the bottom up, showing the profiled entity in relation to its parent organizations, including its ultimate parent. When the entity owns or operates concepts beneath it, up to three are displayed.
