IHOP began in 1958 with the first International House of Pancakes in Toluca Lake, California. The founders were brothers Al and Jerry Lapin, along with Al and Trudy Kallis. Franchising began in 1960. The parent company became International Industries in 1963, and the IHOP name began in 1973. IHOP became a public company in 1998. IHOP Corp. acquired Applebee’s in 2007, forming the restaurant organization now known as Dine Brands. Dine Brands is IHOP’s parent company and ultimate parent. IHOP is headquartered at 10 W. Walnut Street in Pasadena, California, and has locations in all 50 states. More than 90% of the system is franchised, with single-unit and multi-unit franchisees. They are a casual and family dining concept serving American food. Breakfast is available throughout the day, along with lunch and dinner.
