Denny’s began in 1953 in Lakewood, California, founded by Harold Butler and Richard Jezak as Danny’s Donuts. The business became Danny’s Coffee Shop in 1956 and Denny’s in 1959. Denny’s is headquartered at 203 E. Main Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and has locations in all 50 states. In January 2026, Yadav Enterprises acquired Denny's and is now its parent company. As a result, Denny's was de-listed from the public markets. More than 90% of the system is franchised. Franchisees may operate one restaurant or multiple locations. Denny’s is a casual/family dining concept serving American food. Breakfast is available throughout the day, along with lunch and dinner. Many locations operate 24 hours, although hours vary by franchisee and market. A typical restaurant has about 150 seats and occupies about 3,500 square feet. Restaurant size and seating vary by market and site type.

The Restaurant Enterprise Index focuses primarily on companies with a substantial role in restaurant operations. Investment firms, financial sponsors, and other ownership partners are generally not included unless they also play a meaningful operating role; an otherwise qualifying entity may also be omitted when sufficient reliable information is unavailable.
The ownership hierarchy follows the entity structure from the bottom up, showing the profiled entity in relation to its parent organizations, including its ultimate parent. When the entity owns or operates concepts beneath it, up to three are displayed.
